November approaches and with it also Halloween.
Halloween, originally “All Hallows’ Even” (All Saints’ Day evening) was brought by Irish emigrants from approx. 1830 in the USA.
In the course of time Halloween developed besides Christmas and Thanksgiving to one of the most important celebrations in the USA, and is celebrated also in Germany “enthusiastically”.
With the poor time on the fields arriving, people once thought that the border between dead and living persons narrowed in, and that the souls of the dead people searched new landlords for themselves.
To protect from “unfriendly takeover”, one disguised himself and pumpkins were hollowed out which were then put as a guard of the families before the houses. [Read more →]
